Skip the fluff and go straight to the map
Glasgow has a nickname, ‘The Dear Green Place’, that its residents embrace due to the city’s abundance of public parks and gardens. It’s often said that this nickname is a translation of the original Gaelic name Glaschu, although this etymology is not clear cut.
Having recently moved to the city from rural North Argyll, cycling around the 102 acres of the nearby Alexandra Park is a relief from Glasgow’s concrete and traffic. This got me wondering about other parks in the city so off to the internet I went. I couldn’t find a definitive list, the Council website only lists the larger parks and this website lists at least one hundred but it isn’t complete or entirely accurate. I started creating my own map of the city parks and this led to the idea of visiting them all by bike, partly because I love quirky geographical challenges and partly as a reason to use the bike and keep fit. It’s also a prefect way to get to know the city.
Below I will list each park, garden or public green space as I visit them. I will list them alphabetically but will not be visiting them in that order. Please don’t expect the photographs to be representative, often the parks will have children playing and I will not be taking pictures of those areas. Check back for updates but be aware that there will be extended periods when I am not in the city and no parks will be added at those times. This is my working map, check the list there before suggesting a missing park.
I will add pins to the map below as I visit each park. Click the pin for a link to the relevant listing below. The map uses OpenStreetMap and is created with uMap.
