A tune in 3/2 time, also know as a triple hornpipe or a 3/2 hornpipe in the English and Border traditions. As far as I know it was first written down in the late 1600s and has had many names including Rusty Gulley, Three Sharp Knives, Three Case Knives, Three Rusty Swords, Jock and Tam and Punchinello’s Hornpipe. Robert Burns used the melody for his song ‘Wee Willie Grey’.
This setting is based on David Young’s setting in his Drummond Castle Manuscript, Book 1, from 1737 where the tune is called Lady Susan Montgomery’s Hornpipe. I have transposed it up from G to D and bars five and six are folded down to fit the pipes. I play the tune in this set.
