Go To Berwick Johnny

Auld Tunes – 3/2 Tunes

A tune in 3/2 time, also know as a triple hornpipe or a 3/2 hornpipe. Arguably the best known of the 3/2 tunes in Scotland but well known south of the border too. The tune first appears in 1694 and has been published many times since. It is also known as Berwick Billy, Berwick Bully and The New Road to Berwick.

This is another tune that I can’t recall learning or where I first heard or saw it. It was on Gordon Money’s pioneering 1989 album ‘O’er The Border’ and has been included in most contemporary Lowland / Border tune books. A four part ABCB setting has become the standard. I play the tune in this set.
